The Technology and Law Program offers a cluster of graduate-level subjects associated with the Technology and Policy Program (TPP) at MIT, as well as research opportunities at the interface of law and technology. The program offers a two-semester sequence in Environmental Law and Policy and a one-semester course in Technology, Law, and the Working Environment. Students from MIT, the Harvard School of Public Health, and Harvard Law School participate in these interactive, Socratic teaching offerings. Law, Technology, and Public Policy, which is a core subject in the Technology and Policy Program, is also offered. The subject, Sustainability, Trade, and Environment, offered through both the School of Management and TPP, explores the many dimensions of sustainability and the use of political and legal mechanisms to further sustainable development.

Research activities of the Technology and Law Program include the design and evaluation of policies intended to (1) encourage technological change through regulation, liability, and economic incentives that will help prevent chemical accidents and pollution, (2) promote environmental justice by involving communities in governmental and corporate decisions that affect their health, safety, and environmental concerns, and (3) integrate concerns for sustainability, trade, and the environment. Technology and Law publications are grouped into the following areas:

  • Law and Regulation
  • Regulation and Technological Change
  • Cost-Benefit Analysis and Environmental Decision-making
  • Negotiated Regulation and Public/Worker Participation
  • Industrial Ecology
  • Environmental and Occupational Health
  • Labor Issues and Workers' Compensation
